There are two types of live-in caregiver solutions. Those in which the caregiver must be provided a space and bed to sleep and those that do not require the caregiver be given a bed and sleep break. These types are commonly known as "live-in" and "split- shift" caregiving.

Live-in Care

Is a type of around the clock care where 1 aide is present for an entire day (24 hours). In this arrangement, the aide is supposed to recieve an 8-hour period of uninterrupted sleep. This is a cheaper alternative to around the clock care as the agency, by law, is only required to compensate the aide for 13 hours of work so long as the aide's 8-hour sleep period is uninterrupted.

Split-Shift Care

Is a type of around the clock care where 2 aides are scheduled each day, each working a 12 hour shift. With this service, sleeping breaks are not provided. This type of care is more appropriate for individuals who have higher care needs. However, it is also the more costly option of the two as the aides are compensated for every hour of their work.
