We want to pay privately for an aide a few days a week for my grandmother in Brooklyn. What do agencies usually charge per hour, and what makes the price go up or down?

Private home care in NYC is usually billed by the hour, and the price mainly depends on the type of caregiver, the number of hours, minimum visit length, and whether you need overnight, live-in or 24-hour coverage.

What usually changes the price:

  • Type of caregiver. A home health aide or personal care aide costs far less than a nurse; nursing visits for wound care or injections are priced separately.
  • Hours and minimums. Many agencies set a minimum per visit, so a few short visits can cost more per week than fewer longer ones.
  • Schedule. Nights, weekends and holidays may be priced differently, and 24-hour coverage with two aides costs more than live-in.
  • Special needs. Ask whether dementia care, heavy lifting or two-person transfers change the rate.
  • What is included. Ask if the rate covers nurse assessment and supervision, backup aides and coordination.

Before signing, ask each agency for a written quote that shows the hourly rate, minimum hours, holiday policy and how billing works.

For comparison, ProLife's private-pay aide rate starts at $32/hour with a 4-hour minimum, the same rate for HHA, personal care and dementia-trained aides; see https://prolifehc.com/private-home-care/.
