A private nurse visit at home in NYC is usually billed by the hour or per visit, and the cost depends on the type of nurse, visit length and what care is needed; if your father qualifies for Medicare home health after surgery, nursing visits may be covered.

Check coverage first. Medicare may pay for part-time skilled nursing, such as wound care, through a Medicare-certified home health agency when he is homebound and his doctor orders it. Ask the surgeon or hospital discharge planner for a home health referral, or call 1-800-MEDICARE.

When families pay privately, the price usually depends on:

  • RN versus LPN.
  • Length and frequency of visits.
  • Complexity: wound care, IV therapy, injections or catheters.
  • Weekend or urgent visits.

Ask for a written quote and what supplies are included.

Watch the wound between visits. Call his doctor for increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pus, a bad smell, or fever. Call 911 for heavy bleeding, chest pain or trouble breathing.

Many families combine short nurse visits with an aide for daily help.

ProLife's private RN visits start from $95/hour for wound care, injections, IV and catheters; see https://prolifehc.com/nurse-services/.
