LASIK or an eye exam with dilation — do I need someone to take me home?

I'm getting LASIK, and separately my dad has an eye exam with dilated pupils. Can we get ourselves home, or do we need someone with us?

Many LASIK centers require someone to take you home after the procedure, because your vision is blurry and you may be given a sedative. After an eye exam with dilation, vision can stay blurred and light-sensitive for several hours. Ask your eye doctor what they require; the clinic sets the rule.

Either way, getting through the city with blurred vision is the risky part: stairs, subway platforms, traffic.

A medical escort can take you or your dad there and home. A trained home health aide picks you up at home, rides with you by accessible vehicle or Uber, stays in the room through the visit, takes notes on what the doctor says, and brings you home and settled.

ProLife's medical escort is private pay: $32 an hour, or a flat $145–$250 for the whole visit (pickup, staying through the appointment, and the ride home). Medicaid and Medicare do not cover it. Prices can change; current rates: https://prolifehc.com/medical-escort/

Book as soon as you have the date, ideally 48–72 hours ahead; shorter notice is possible when someone is available. Call (718) 232-2777.
